Boundary 6: A Helping Hand
Asking for help does not make you weak, it makes you human
The saying “God will never give you more than you can bear” is not true, in fact, it’s far from the truth. God will almost always give us more than we can bear because it causes us to lean on him and each other. We were created for the community. As God created animals, heaven and earth alone but when it came to the creation of man he said “Let us make man in OUR image” (Genesis 1:26). Now, that’s not me adding to scripture, that is the scripture! Even God himself has a heavenly community.
Jesus was no different, he was fully human and fully God in one body, he desired community and at times found strength in it.
He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Matthew 26:37-38
Jesus was at the Garden of Gethsemane prior to His crucifixion. He took Peter James and John his disciples with him for support. This was arguably one of the most stressful times that Jesus would experience. Jesus would go on to sweat blood, because of the stress he was under.
Jesus fully understood his mission and he fully understood God’s will. Jesus knew when to ask for help. When you have come to the end of yourself and you can’t handle whatever “it” is anymore, learn to ask for help!
Jesus knew when to ask for help and who to go to when the time came
Jesus spent time cultivating human relationships while keeping a constant connection to God the father. We were put on Earth to build relationships with people, but more importantly to be in a relationship with God. Learning to utilize healthy God-centered connections with the right people, will change how you do life!
An “I can do it all alone” attitude is derived from pride and sometimes unhealed trauma. We were all created to have different functions as one part of a full-body, who work together to accomplish God’s will. That is what brings God glory! We can’t be so self-important or so hurt that we discard the people we need and who need us.
However, I am telling you the truth: It’s good for you that I’m going away. If I don’t go away, the helper won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. John 16:7
Jesus was God in human form; he could only be in one place at one time. He understood the limitations of his human body. But also made it clear that we all needed help, more help than his human form could provide.
When Jesus died, he left us with the Holy Spirit, who as believers we would all have access to. The Holy Spirit is our direct connection to God. Asking for help shouldn’t be foreign to Christians, Jesus came because we needed help, the Holy Spirit is with us because we need help, there are 117 verses about help found in the bible.
As long as we exist, we will need other people, we can’t do everything alone. God allowed us to have both strengths and weaknesses so we can learn how to work together and lean on him.
